In-Forest presentation at the Nordic STS Conference

June 9, 2023

PhD researcher Camilla Tetley presented at the 6th Nordic STS Conference 2023, which took place at the University of Oslo, from 7-9 June 2023. With the theme, “Disruption and repair in and beyond STS”, the conference explored how Science Technology Studies (STS) and its methods, theories, and empirical approaches contribute to the study of societal development – especially in instances of disruption and repair.

Camilla presented a talk prepared with In-Forest PI Dr. Susanne Koch, entitled “An experimental and reflexive study of interdisciplinary forest sustainability projects to uncover inequalities in academic collaborations.” It was part of the panel, Academic Collaboration as an Experiment organised by Tobias Drewlani (Technical University of Berlin) and Maria Bårdsen Hesjedal (Norwegian University of Science and Technology). Drawing on her ethnographic experiences from the In-Forest project, Camilla explored the role of researchers in producing knowledge, reflecting on their own positionality, and engaging in research within different cultural contexts.

Her talk instigated discussions on how researchers should interact with project participants, and how to involve them in the research process, especially during the ‘in between’ of data collection and publication. Some reflexive suggestions included giving the research material back to participants once generated, giving them the chance to see it, and make comments/requests as desired.
The panel and conference overall served as a valuable space of exchange with other researchers in the field; Camilla’s talk prompted an invitation for her to share more of the In-Forest research in a seminar at Sodertorn University in Sweden on 27 October, 2023.
